Character Name: Neuvillette (first name unknown)
Canon: Genshin Impact
Canon History: Wiki

Canon Personality:

Kind-hearted - While he is beholden to his duty as the Chief Justice of Fontaine, he is generally good-natured and caring of the people he serves - he just does it from afar. He is shown to be very warm and loving towards creatures he cares for as well, like the melusines, and they consider him to be their father.

Selfless - Ambition is a foreign word to him - things need judging, so here he is, nothing more, nothing less.

Just - He has a very strong sense of justice that overrules any of his personal feelings, as shown by him declaring a dear friend guilty, as was required by law, even though all signs pointed to him being innocent. He does not care who it is to be judged, be it human or god or Heavenly Principle; as long as there is a need, he will do it.

Calm/Patient - Not much can faze him, and he stays collected even in the most dire of situations, preferring to focus on the task on hand. Being Furina's right hand, he's shown to be immune to her antics and has what seems to be an endless font of patience, still continuing to support her no matter how exasperating she is.

Intelligent/Eloquent/Confident - He is very well-read and able to make deductions easily, and he is articulate on many subjects, even in trivial ones. He knows his strengths and limits and does not downplay what he can or cannot do.

Emotional/Empathetic(?) - He feels things quite deeply even though he doesn't show them outwardly. One of the things he wants the most is to understand what makes humans tick, so he tries to understand every emotional overture he comes across. He doesn't succeed most of the time, but he's trying very hard. Gold star, Neuvillette.

Kind of lost - Most jokes fly over his head, and he has no shame in saying so. He is unfamiliar with human customs and will earnestly try his best to understand. If you squint you'll be able to almost see the ??? over his head sometimes.

Blunt - If he considers you familiar: if he has an opinion on something, you'll know, whether you like it or not.

Solitary/Lonely - He is a loner by choice, as he doesn't want personal relationships to cloud his judgement.

AU Name: N/A
AU Age: ~2000 (canon does not specify how old he is but he is at least 400 years old and likely much older than that)
AU Birthday: December 18

AU History: It starts like this: one day, he woke up, with his current face and body, in what he would later find out was Gaul, occupied by the Holy Roman Empire. This would be of no particular importance except that he had no memory of anything at all, and that he had a fey creature who called herself Melusine living in his shadow.

He built a life for himself like that, taking an interest in the complex tapestry of laws that made up the judiciary system of Rome. It wasn't long, though, before he realized, that while his hair was already eternally white, he did not bear any further signs of aging. Laws ought to be the same wherever he went, so he left for another land to avoid suspicion.

Centuries passed like this. He never remembered who he was, or what happened, or what purpose he really had in life. What little memories he had of Before were fragmented, and fragments of memories he'd built he had to feed to Melusine, for her to stay with him. Or for him to stay with her. He couldn't tell. He couldn't remember.

Continents passed like this, too. He'd become well-versed in several countries' worth of lawmaking, but never able to settle into a practice for long. His sense of self had become entwined with what he saw was his duty, and he clung to it. It didn't really matter how much he learned, because Melusine would eat it anyways; at least she was gracious enough to let him choose which memories she would devour.

In bursts, he remembers, centuries later: living with a mage(?) named Egeria, who told him who he truly was. He doesn't remember what she said, but he remembers what he was taught. Or what she had awakened. It didn't matter to him. She passed into the shadow like everyone else he'd come to know, in a war she'd told him he was not ready to fight in. It was not just, but Neuvillette was starting to realize, not much of the world was.

In between, he remembers: endless trials in courts of law. They all look the same after a while. It is with clarity he recollects setting aside his court robes and saving an orphanage from the clutches of human greed. Several dozen children who he'd personally reintegrated into society, who he'd revealed his longevity to: all of whom kept in touch with him, loved him like their father, until they all, too, went into the long night.

This memory he does not give to Melusine.

In the end, he remembers: befriending a man, and his younger sister, the three of them foreigners in his newest strange land. He'd once again taken up the mantle of a judge of law, but in a series of events beyond his control, the sister is framed for, and lost to, a crime she did not commit - a crime designed to tarnish his reputation, but the man does not allow it to happen. He takes the blame, and Neuvillette is forced to judge him as fairly as the public expects. He sentences his once-close friend, who had already lost everything, to exile, and breaks down behind close doors. It was justice, but at a cost he did not know was worth paying.

This memory he does not give to Melusine either.

Four hundred (?) years later, he finds an echo of his old friend, in a woman named Furina, who bore the same title as Egeria did: Focalors, the Water-walker. He follows, and stays with her across land and sea alike, as she tries to find a way to stop a prophesied flood from destroying her home and everything she held dear. Neuvillette may be able to control the element they both have an affinity for with the help of his fey shadow, but he is not strong enough. Maybe he once was.

She sends him to Kaisou, a city of crossroads, to find what he can, even though they both know it is less for her benefit, and more for his. He remembers the promise of the flood, and the sin that it will wash away, and the fact that he can do nothing about it.

AU Personality Differences: None really, he's stayed the same.

Element: Water
Purchased Powers: True Immortality (4), Low Water Manipulation (2)
